Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center (Phase II) - Interpretive Exhibit Graphics

These graphics were designed to accompany an interactive exhibit geared toward young children that describes the formation and impact of tornadoes. Custom typography and illustration combine with “textured” graphics to create excitement.

These, like the tornado thematic graphics, accompany an interactive exhibit. In the exhibit visitors, as a group, create a “thunderstorm” by pounding drums, turning fans and triggering a light show. The design of these graphics reflect the urgency and excitement of thunderstorms.

More images from this project are available here.

Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center (Phase I) – Interpretive Exhibit Graphics

Rarely has work been so fun as when I had the opportunity to develop the graphics program for the Weather Discovery Center in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania! The PWDC is located in a re-purposed post office and uses the legendary Punxsutawney Phil (the famous weather “predicting” groundhog) as a vehicle for weather education. Visitors to the PWDC are treated to a collection of postal artifacts, the Meteorologist Hall of Fame, Phil’s Burrow and a host of interactive exhibits.

Three of nine large translucent window graphics in the lobby of the Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center are shown here. Each graphic illustrates a different weather condition and a person interacting with that weather.

Punxsutawney Phil, of Groundhog Day fame, is quite a popular rodent. This thematic graphic (above) show a couple of his biggest fans.

Michigan: From the Depths of Time - Graphic Typicals

Simple graphics designed to take advantage of theatrical lighting techniques combine with thematic environments to create an immersive experience at a Muskegeon, Michigan area museum. Shown above is a graphic that introduces the visitor to the Shallow Seas gallery and combines with a diorama which displays species commonly found in the Michigan area 500,000,000 years ago.

Many maps, like this one (above), act as benchmarks as the visitor passes through each gallery in the museum. They illustrate how dramatically the area we now know as Michigan has changed throughout time. The lowest portion of the graphic is screenprinted text on satin-finished metal, softly reflecting light and color.

Fort Des Moines Museum & Education Center – Interpretive Exhibit Graphics

The Fort Des Moines Museum & Education Center was built to honor the first officer class of African-American men of 1917 and the establishment of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps.

This was one of the first projects for which I was charged with the task of designing and producing the graphics. It was a great honor to have a hand in telling the story of the first black Army officers and the pioneering Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps. The finished exhibit strikes balance between a memorial and an interactive/educational exhibit.

This artifact case and this mural act as a transition between the Interwar Gallery and the WWII Gallery. The WWII Gallery focuses on the contributions of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps.

Various exhibits and kiosks enumerate the contributions of African-American officers. The straight-forward graphic style allows visitors to easily find and understand the many stories that make up the larger history of African-American officers.

Whiting Forest - Interpretive Graphics

Whiting Forest is a 40 acre nature preserve in the middle of Midland, Michigan. It provides opportunities for interpretive walks, nature watching/photography and educational programs.

The colorful graphics designed for this kiosk offer a visual counter point to the heavy wood and iron construction of the Whiting Forest visitor center.

Water Tunnel - Illustrations

Six illustrations from a larger series depicting the relationships between humans, animals and our water are shown above.

Work completed while employed by DesignCraftsmen.

Ronald Reagan Library: Air Force 1 Pavilion - Graphic Typicals

During his presidency, Ronald Reagan spent many hours aboard his “Flying Whitehouse” traversing the globe; promoting “the pillars of democracy” and freedom.

This graphic served as a template for 8 glass panels which detailed significant trips Reagan made during each year of his presidency. The LED boards, at the top of each panel, enumerates the miles traveled by AF-1.

Reader rails reinforce the visual strategy of the exhibit and tell the story of life aboard AF-1.

An enormous collage of photos, combined with a series of presidential banners reflect on the various roles AF-1 plays in the life of the president; office, meeting room and sanctuary.

The Soaring Achievements of John C. Houlbolt – Graphic Typicals

John Houbolt was an advocate of the Lunar Orbit Rendevous method of landing an astronaut on the moon. His campaign for LOR as a major contribution to the safe exploration of the moon by Apollo astronauts. Shown above are typical interpretive, diagram and label panel designs. The graphic treatment will unify the exhibit with a limited color palette while referencing the writings of John Houbolt and lunar photography.
